Dear NERSC users: I am pleased to report that NERSC’s HPSS Archive system will undergo a major upgrade from version 7.4.3 to version 9.3, improving its performance, capabilities, and ease of use, and simplifying the process of performing further upgrades in the future. The upgrade process requires that we take the HPSS Archive system down beginning at 7 pm (Pacific Time) on July 14 and ending at 5 pm on July 19, 2024, while we update the software and hardware of the system. User data will remain safely stored on the archive, but it will be inaccessible during the downtime period, so please plan accordingly. There are many exciting improvements to the archive system as a result of this update, including better performance due to hardware and software upgrades, the potential for new object-oriented interfaces, and reduced downtime for future upgrades. As part of the maintenance we are moving the metadata servers to new, faster hardware, and transferring the storage of the metadata to faster, solid-state storage media. In addition, we expect that the metadata enhancements in version 9.3 will result in better interactive and small-file metadata performance, which could allow the I/O from a wider diversity of file sizes to perform well. On the system administration side, it will also simplify the process of future updates with its more modern software structure, meaning that future upgrades will take less time. Thank you for your patience during this upgrade process. Please open a ticket at https://help.nersc.gov if you have any questions or if you need help finding temporary storage space while Archive is unavailable. Regards, -Rebecca _______________________________________________ Users mailing list Users@nersc.gov
