[Users] NERSC Will Continue to Operate in Event of Government Shutdown

Dear NERSC Users, As you know, NERSC is funded by the US Government's Department of Energy. It’s becoming increasingly clear that we can expect a temporary lapse in federal appropriation to begin over the weekend. Federal funding for the current fiscal year expires Saturday, September 30, and as of today, Congress has not passed any of the 12 appropriations bills that would need to be signed into law to keep the government running. Alternatively, Congress could pass a continuing resolution, or CR, that would keep the federal government operational until a full-year agreement can be reached. If no spending legislation or CR is passed, an appropriation lapse will begin at midnight on Sunday, October 1. The purpose of this message is to alleviate any concerns you may have about NERSC ceasing operations during this lapse in federal appropriation. Berkeley Lab, which operates NERSC, will continue to operate as usual (with some minor changes of no impact to NERSC operations) while Congress resolves this issue. Berkeley Lab (and NERSC) has sufficient carryover funding to cover salaries and other expenses, and we do not expect any major disruptions to our mission in the short term. NERSC staff have all been instructed to show up for work as usual. We will continue to operate our center as normal. Should the situation change, we will inform you of how this will impact your use of NERSC. Historically, these lapses have been relatively short, and have not had significant impact on NERSC operations or staff. We are optimistic that a solution to fund the federal government will be reached before there is any major impact on NERSC.
