Dear NERSC Users: As you may already be aware, currently large wildfires in far northern California and Oregon are emitting significant quantities of smoke that are blowing into the San Francisco Bay Area <https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/smoke-forecast-san-francisco-bay-area-18377962.php>. Unfortunately, this means the air quality is particularly poor in Berkeley, where NERSC facilities are sited. We put the HPSS Archive system into a degraded mode overnight, after particulate levels spiked to an unsafe level. At this time, users can save files to the HPSS system; they will go into the hard-disk cache that fronts the system. Files that you saved or accessed in the past two weeks or so are likely retrievable, they are likely still located in the cache. Older files that have been written or retrieved before then are inaccessible until the system is restored to full operation. We are watching the weather reports and the particulate count in the machine room. Weather models suggest that the smoke will remain in the area for the next two days, and dissipate after that. So for the rest of the week, we will remain vigilant and may need to shut down additional equipment should particulate levels worsen. We will keep you up to date with the latest information as we learn more.
