NERSC remains in operation, with the majority of NERSC staff continuing to work remotely, and staff essential to operations onsite. We do not expect any disruptions to our operations in the foreseeable future. You can continue to expect regular online consulting and account support as well as schedulable online appointments. Trainings continue to be held online. Regular maintenances on the systems continue to be performed while minimizing onsite staff presence, which could result in longer downtimes than would occur under normal circumstances. Because onsite staffing remains minimal, we request that you continue to refrain from calling NERSC Operations except to report urgent system issues. ([back to top](#top)) --- ## This Week's Events and Deadlines <a name="section3"/></a> ## ### Register for Thursday's HPE/Cray Perftools & Reveal Training <a name="perftools"/></a> NERSC will host a two-hour training event on HPE's Perftools and Reveal tools this Thursday, September 22, 2022. HPE's Perftools (Performance Measurement and Analysis Tools) and Reveal are provided on HPE systems such as NERSC's Perlmutter, ALCF's Polaris, and OLCF's Frontier to collect CPU and GPU performance. HPE Senior Distinguished Technologist John Levesque will illustrate how to take an all-MPI application and first use Perftools to identify which parts of the applications should run on the GPU, and then how to use Reveal to aid in adding OpenMP Offload directives to the original application. The talk will continue with showing how to gather runtime statistics and improve the performance of the applications. The event will be presented online using Zoom. ([back to top](#top)) --- ## Perlmutter <a name="section4"/></a> ## ### Perlmutter Machine Status <a name="perlmutter"/></a> Perlmutter is now available to all users with an active NERSC account. This includes both the phase 1 (GPU based) and phase 2 (CPU-only) nodes. There is currently **no** charge to run jobs on Perlmutter, but we expect to begin charging after the scratch file system upgrade is complete. See <https://docs.nersc.gov/current/#perlmutter> for a list of current known issues and <https://docs.nersc.gov/jobs/policy/#qos-limits-and-charges> for tables of the QOS's available on Perlmutter. This newsletter section will be updated regularly with the latest Perlmutter status. ### Charging for Perlmutter Begins after Scratch Upgrade <a name="pmcharging"/></a> Perlmutter has been an extremely valuable system for many NERSC users during its current "early science" phase. Because the system has been so popular during this non-charging phase, average queue wait times are long for all but the smallest jobs. In order to alleviate this pressure and to align utilization with allocation award decisions made by Office of Science program managers through the 2022 ERCAP process, we plan to start charging for Perlmutter usage after the completion of the Perlmutter scratch file system upgrade. This upgrade is ongoing; we will inform users when we have a better idea of the date charging will begin. Utilization will be charged for both GPU and CPU-only nodes. These charges come out of separate pools; please see the CPU and GPU tabs in Iris for more details on your project and personal balances and utilization. On Perlmutter, one hour of utilization on a node in the regular queue will incur a one-hour charge to the appropriate balance, e.g., a 10-node, 2-hour job on the CPU nodes will be charged as 20 CPU node-hours. ### (NEW/UPDATED) Perlmutter Scratch Work Ongoing; Periodic CFS Performance Issues & Stale File Handles <a name="pmscratch"/></a> Work continues on finding solutions to the file system performance issues discovered after mounting the Perlmutter scratch file system last week. As of this writing, NERSC and HPE engineers have devoted the day to debugging the issues, but no breakthroughs have yet been found. In addition, we are receiving user reports of periodic lock-ups of the CommunityFile System (CFS) and "stale file handles" when users log into Perlmutter. We are aware of these issues, which are primarily a result of the additional traffic on CFS from Perlmutter. We expect that when Perlmutter scratch is fully updated and running well on Perlmutter, the decrease in demand for CFS will clear up the majority of these issues. The CFS network upgrade scheduled for next year will also loosen the underlying network bandwidth bottleneck that is the main cause of these issues. We appreciate your patience as we work with HPE to provide a solution to the Perlmutter scratch file system issues. ([back to top](#top)) --- ## Updates at NERSC <a name="section5"/></a> ## ### Save the date! NUG Annual Meeting Oct 11,12,13 <a name="nugannual"/></a> The NERSC User Group (NUG) Annual Meeting for 2022 will be held virtually, over 3 half-days. Sessions will be run during Pacific Time mornings. Schedule and registration details will be posted at <https://www.nersc.gov/users/NUG/annual-meetings/nug-2022/> in the next few weeks. Please mark October 11, 12 and 13 in your calendar, and watch for further annoucements in the NERSC Weekly email. ### Join or Nominate a Colleague for the NUG Executive Committee <a name="nugex"/></a> The NUG Executive Committee (NUGEX) is a group of NERSC users who oversee NUG activities for the benefit of NERSC's user community. Committee members serve for 2-3 years, with up to half of the committee being replaced each year. We're looking for new committee members who, between them, are representative of the diverse range of NERSC users - early career and senior researchers, users who run jobs, project members who analyse data and PIs who manage project teams. NUGEX will meet once per month, for up to 1 hour, for activities including: - Helping identify HPC needs from NERSC users & scientific communities - Helping identify training needs for NERSC users - Providing topics or activities related to the NUG annual meeting - Coordinating activities at meetings and conferences where NERSC users and/or NERSC staff contributions would be valuable - Receiving updates from NERSC on important topics We are currently seeking volunteers and nominations for NUGEX -- if you would like to participate, or to nominate a potential NUGEX member, please fill out the short form at <https://forms.gle/8xR3k86hvByxJCjw9> today. ### Allocation Reductions for Underusing Projects Last Thursday <a name="allocred"/></a> Twice annually, NERSC performs allocation reductions on projects in the DOE Mission Science category (this includes the vast majority of projects). ALCC, Director's Reserve, Exploratory, and Educational projects are exempt from this process. The allocation reduction process takes unused allocation from projects not using them and allows DOE program managers to redistribute that time to other projects. In 2022, only CPU Node hours will be impacted. PIs and PI proxies may request exemptions, at least one week before the reduction date. The first allocation reductions were performed on May 19, 2022. The second set of reductions occurred last Thursday, September 15, 2022. For more information, including how much allocation was removed, please see <https://www.nersc.gov/users/accounts/allocations/allocation-reductions>. ### ERCAP Allocations Requests Due October 3 <a name="ercap"/></a> The [Call for Proposals](https://www.nersc.gov/users/accounts/allocations/2023-call-for-proposals-to-use-nersc-resources) for the 2023 Energy Research Computing Allocations Process (ERCAP) has been announced. Requests are being accepted until October 3, 2022. The majority of NERSC resources and compute time are allocated through the ERCAP process. Proposals are reviewed and awarded by Office of Science allocation managers and implemented by NERSC. While NERSC accepts proposals at any time during the year, applicants are encouraged to submit proposals by the above deadline in order to receive full consideration for Allocation Year 2023 (AY2023). All current projects (including Exploratory, Education, and Director's Reserve, but excluding ALCC) must be renewed for 2023 if you wish to continue using NERSC. New projects for AY2023 should be submitted at this time as well. In 2023, NERSC will be allocating compute time based on the capacity of Perlmutter GPU and Perlmutter CPU nodes only. You will need to request time on each resource individually; hours are not transferrable between the two different architectures. NERSC allocations experts provided an overview of the process at the [August 18 NUG meeting](https://www.nersc.gov/users/NUG/teleconferences/nug-meeting-aug-2022/), and will hold virtual office hours on the following dates: September 29 and October 3 (ERCAP due date). In addition, you can always submit a question or help request through the NERSC help portal (<https://help.nersc.gov>) or to <allocations@nersc.gov>. ### Cori to be retired after AY2022 <a name="coriretire"/></a> Cori was installed in 2015, and after more than six years may be NERSC's longest-lived system. Perlmutter, whose CPU partition provides computing power equivalent to all of Cori, is expected to be fully operational for Allocation Year 2023 (AY2023). We plan to retire Cori at the end of this allocation year -- all AY2023 allocations will be based on Perlmutter's capacity. AY2023 Allocations were the topic of the August 18th NUG Monthly Meeting (please see <https://www.nersc.gov/users/NUG/teleconferences/nug-meeting-aug-2022/> for links to the slides and the recorded video of the event), and we may delay Cori's retirement if unexpected issues arise with Perlmutter. Users who are about to start or are in the process of learning to use Perlmutter for their workflows are encouraged to attend the September 28th [New User Training](#newusertrain) and the two-day [Data Day](#dataday) event October 26-27. As part of the Cori retirement plan, we will begin a **software freeze** on Cori on **October 17, 2022**. After this date, no new user-facing software will be deployed by NERSC (unless security or other considerations require it). ([back to top](#top)) --- ## Calls for Participation <a name="section6"/></a> ## ### Apply for NERSC GPU Hackathon (virtual; Nov 30, Dec 6-8) by September 27 <a name="gpuhackathons"/></a> NERSC, in conjunction with NVIDIA and OLCF, will be hosting a GPU Hackathon from Dec 6th-8th with an opening day on Nov 30th as part of the annual [GPU Hackathon Series](https://gpuhackathons.org/). This year, the hackathon will be virtual and selected code teams will be able to test and develop on [Perlmutter](https://www.nersc.gov/systems/perlmutter/), and there is also the option to use an ARM system. Hackathons combine teams of developers with mentors to either prepare their own application(s) to run on GPUs or optimize their application(s) that currently run on GPUs. This virtual event consists of a kick-off day, where hackers and mentors video-conference to meet and develop their list of hackathon goals, as well as get set up on the relevant systems. This is followed by a one week preparation period before the 3-day intensive primary event. Teams should consist of at least three developers who are intimately familiar with (some part of) their application, and they will work alongside two mentors with GPU programming expertise. If you want/need to get your code running/optimized on a GPU-accelerated system, these hackathons offer a unique opportunity to set aside 4 days, surround yourself with experts in the field, and push toward your development goals. During the event, teams will have access to compute resources provided by NERSC and OLCF. The Better Scientific Software (BSSw) Fellowship Program provides recognition and funding for leaders and advocates of high-quality scientific software who foster practices, processes, and tools to improve scientific software productivity and sustainability. Each 2023 BSSw Fellow will receive up to $25,000 for an activity that promotes better scientific software. Activities can include organizing a workshop, preparing a tutorial, or creating content to engage the scientific software community. Applications are now being accepted for the BSSw Fellowship Program. Applications from diverse applicants at all career stages (including students, early, mid-career, and senionr professionals) from throughout the computational science and engineering (CSE) and software communities are encouraged, especially from people with the following characteristics: - Passionate about scientific software. - Interested in contributing powerful ideas, tools, methodologies, and more that improve the quality of scientific software - Able to use the fellowship to broadly benefit the scientific software community. - Affiliated with a US-based institution that is able to receive federal funding. Applications are due **September 30**! ### Registration is Open for Confab22 ESnet User Meeting, October 12-13! <a name="confab22"/></a> Registration is open for [Confab22](https://go.lbl.gov/confab22) -- ESnet's first annual user meeting! The event will take place from October 12-13 at the Berkeley Marriott Residence Inn (as well as online, for remote attendees). The meeting is an opportunity for scientists from all domains and around the world to learn about cutting-edge networking technology, share scientific data mobility needs, and help co-design the future of scientific networking. ([back to top](#top)) --- ## Upcoming Training Events <a name="section7"/></a> ## ### TotalView Tutorial Rescheduled for Next Thursday, September 29 <a name="tvtutorial"/></a> NERSC is hosting a training event on the TotalView debugger next Thursday, September 29, 2022. TotalView is a debugger that can be used to debug your parallel or serial C, C++, Fortran, and CUDA applications. In this training, engineers from Perforce Software (the makers of TotalView) will teach and demonstrate how to use the TotalView tool for debugging parallel codes on GPUs and CPUs. For more information and to register, please see <https://www.nersc.gov/users/training/events/totalview-tutorial-september-29-2022/> ### Register for NERSC New User Training, Next Wednesday, September 28 <a name="newusertrain"/></a> NERSC is hosting a one-day training event for new users next Wednesday, September 28, 2022. The goal of the training is to provide users new to NERSC with the basics on NERSC computational systems; accounts and allocations; programming environment, running jobs, tools, and best practices; and the data ecosystem. This training will be focused on Perlmutter. Current Cori users who have not yet started or are working on migrating your applications to Perlmutter are encouraged to attend presentations on using Perlmutter. The purpose of the training is to help VASP users to use VASP on the Perlmutter and Cori systems efficiently. The training will begin with a 40-minute presentation, followed by an 80-minute hands-on session. For more information and to register, please see <https://www.nersc.gov/users/training/events/vasp-user-hands-on-training-on-september-27-2022/> ### IDEAS-ECP Webinar on "Investing in Code Reviews for Better Research Software", October 12 <a name="ecpwebinar"/></a> The next webinar in the [Best Practices for HPC Software Developers](http://ideas-productivity.org/events/hpc-best-practices-webinars/) series is entitled "Investing in Code Reviews for Better Research Software", and will take place **Wednesday, October 12, at 10:00 am Pacific time.** In this webinar, Thibault Lestang (Imperial College London), Dominik Krzeminski (University of Cambridge), and Valerio Maggio (Software Sustainability Institute) will detail the benefits that code review, a software development practice that is standard in software engineering outside the science fields, can bring to scientific software developers, particularly improvements in software quality, improved teamwork, and knowledge transfer. They will highlight common challenges in setting up, performing, and maintaining frequent code reviews, and will discuss several approaches and good practices to mitigate these difficulties, including the use of common tools that make code reviews easier. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. Please register [here](https://www.exascaleproject.org/event/codereview/). ### (NEW/UPDATED) Register for October 13 OLCF VisIt Tutorial <a name="visitolcf"/></a> VisIt is an interactive parallel analysis and visualization tool for scientific data. This powerful tool can be used for many types of visualization use cases, including interactive visualizations, animation across time steps, and manipulation with a variety of operators and mathematical expressions. VisIt is capable of visualizing data from more than 120 different scientific data formats. OLCF will be providing a beginner-friendly demo on October 13 that provides an overview of accessing VisIt at OLCF and a tutorial on using VisIt to visualize different datasets on OLCF's Andes cluster. Non-OLCF users are welcome to attend but will not be able to participate in the exercises on Andes. Active participation is not required, however, as the tutorial examples can be followed after attending (it is especially suggested to follow along with the examples while watching the video recording after the event). For more information and to register, please see <https://www.nersc.gov/users/training/events/visit-at-olcf-october-13-2022/>. ### (NEW/UPDATED) Join NERSC for Data Day 2022, October 26-27! <a name="dataday"/></a> NERSC is rebooting its data-centric training, Data Day, as a hybrid two-day event on October 26-27, 2022. Join us for talks, tutorials, and hands-on hacking designed to get you up and running with the latest and greatest data-focused tools for scientific computing on Perlmutter. **Users interested in porting their data workflows to Perlmutter are especially encouraged to participate**. The event is open to users of all experience levels but will focus on intermediate and advanced topics which will help data workloads run performantly at scale. We strongly encourage attendance from graduate students, postdocs, and others who have an active role in development. In addition to advanced tutorials on topics such as python, containers, workflow tools, and data transfer, morning sessions will feature brief lightning talks from NERSC users. You are encouraged to submit a brief lightning talk! Afternoon sessions will take the form of hacking sessions, in which participants will have access to NERSC experts and the opportunity to implement tools in their workloads.
