Dear NERSC Users: This is a reminder that NERSC has scheduled an upgrade of the Perlmutter scratch file system starting this Monday, August 22 at 6:00 am (Pacific) and going through August 31. During this upgrade, the Perlmutter scratch file system will not be available, and all data on the file system will be inaccessible until the file system is re-mounted on Perlmutter at the end of the upgrade. No data will be deleted from the scratch file system; it will simply be inaccessible. The Perlmutter compute system will continue to operate, with the user home directories and CFS available to users. Users are encouraged to use file system licenses <https://docs.nersc.gov/jobs/best-practices/#file-system-licenses> to mark jobs that depend on scratch so we can automatically hold them until the maintenance is over. All jobs that were originally submitted from the scratch file system are automatically tagged with the appropriate “scratch” file system license by the scheduler. If you submitted a job that depends on scratch from another file system, you can add a scratch license with “scontrol update job=<job id> Licenses=scratch[,<other existing licenses>...]”. Finally, be sure to move any data you’ll need within the next two weeks out of the scratch file system before Monday morning at 6 am! This upgrade will double the bandwidth between Perlmutter and the scratch file system, and is required before we can enable more features that may further boost file system performance.
